Proton Perdana 2.0 V6

EASTERN PROMISE

By TONY WILLARD
PROTON is aware of most people's reaction at the mention of its name,
which is some way from a tingle of excitement. But, says the Malaysian company,
better models are on the way, like the Perdana 2.0 V6 saloon. A few are in
the UK for journalists to drive and write about, ahead of a launch planned for
the autumn. Proton is doing all it can to raise expectations - it has also
released its first picture of a 3dr GTI, ready soon to tackle one of the sexier
sectors of the market. The Perdana will compete against cars like the Ford
Mondeo and Renault Laguna, undercutting them by around £2,000 to £3,000 for the
2.0 V6 with high specification which is being given a sneak preview. Expect
the price to be £15,500 to £16,500 for the top version, which will be the V6
with anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, cruise control, leather-trimmed seats,
power steering, electric windows and a good deal more. It is an unwritten
rule in the motor industry that heaping loads of equipment on a mediocre model
is a route to disaster. Leather-trimmed seats feel wrong in a car that's a
dismal failure. Perdana, with all this finery, is over-dressed but not in a
way which makes it a laughing stock. There is nothing seriously wrong with this
model, and some of the problems apparent with these advance cars will, says
Proton UK, be put right. The flimsy sun visors jar alongside the neatly
trimmed leather seats and the wood-effect facia may be a status symbol in
downtown Kuala Lumpur, but it isn't here. Perdana looks smart enough to be
the basis of Proton's programme to persuade people to admire the brand. You
could argue there is nothing amazingly distinctive about the styling, but the
same accusation could equally be levelled at the Mondeo and Laguna. A
four-speed automatic transmission will be fitted to the top Perdana. It has
fuzzy logic, a device designed to adapt to the driving demands of the driver. So
the gear change points in the engine revolution range match, thanks to a
computer, the degree of urgency demanded by the driver. Most noticeable to
the driver, though, is the difference when the overdrive button on the
transmission lever is depressed or released. Overdrive improves the fuel
economy, and makes the engine feel lazy, which is the intention. The 24-valve
engine produces 147bhp, and the suspension feels adequate to handle the
performance. Proton does not reveal a claimed top speed, though it is
comfortably over the widely-assumed motorway cruising speed of 80-85mph. But
Proton has released the top speed of its GTI as 130mph, and gives the 0-60mph
acceleration as around 7.5 seconds. The car is set to challenge the VW Golf GTi
and other models established in the market later this year.
